Esopus features a cross-section of creative disciplines presented in a striking visual format with minimal editorial framing and no advertising. This presentation gives our readers the opportunity to access a wide range of cultural expression with the least possible interference and attracts and engages general readers who might not otherwise pick up this kind of publication. Content for Esopus has been selected using 1) an open submissions policy; 2) recommendations and suggestions from the publication’s board of advisors—including respected creative professionals from a wide range of disciplines—as well as from other contributors and colleagues; and 3) Lippy's 28 years’ experience of working in the art, film, and publishing fields of New York City. Our goal has been to invite individuals representing a wide range of cultural, geographic, and aesthetic backgrounds to provide a more comprehensive picture of contemporary creative expression.
Esopus 24 includes long-form artists' projects by Carlos Amorales, Ted Barker, Hayden Dunham, Marco Maggi, Tony Tasset, and Jane and Louise Wilson. Other contents include an interview with translator Ann Goldstein (perhaps best known for her English translation of Elena Ferrante's novels), who will also translate submissions in Italian from Esopus readers for the issue's subscriber invitational; never-before-published photographs from the early 1970s by Arthur Tress; a piece on the stunning quilts of Ernest B. Haight (1899-1992); a new installment of our regular series, "Modern Artifacts," featuring archival material from The Museum of Modern Art archives reproduced in facsimile; as well as the first appearance of "Public Access," a new series copresented with the New York Public Library which features items from the Library's Carl H. Pforzheimer Collection of Shelley and His Circle. The issue includes a themed CD of brand-new music.
